Silk Therapeutics Is Certified “Zero Plastic Inside”

We’re proud to announce that Beat the Microbead has certified Silk Therapeutics as Zero Plastic Inside!

The Zero Plastic Inside logo can be used by cosmetics brands that do not use plastic-derived ingredients in any of their products. The Silk Therapeutics skincare line is one of only six brands in the United States to receive this certification.

“There’s no place for microplastics in skincare,” says Victoria Collotta, General Manager of Silk Therapeutics. “We have always been committed to using clean ingredients that do not harm people or the planet, and we’re thrilled to partner with Beat the Microbead to raise awareness for this important initiative.”

Zero Plastic InsideFounded in 2012 by the Amsterdam-based Plastic Soup Foundation, Beat the Microbead first lobbied against the plastic microbeads commonly found in products such as scrubs and facial cleansers. These include Polyethylene (PE), Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), Polypropylene (PP), Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and Nylon.

Since then, research by the United Nations and the European Chemical Agency has revealed that more than 500 different microplastic ingredients are used to make everything from scrubs, lipstick and eyeliner to sunscreens, peels, cleansers and moisturizers. Many of these chemicals can be toxic to humans and marine life, and once they enter the environment, they are almost impossible to remove.

“Using cosmetics that contain microplastics can put the ocean, ourselves and our children at risk,” the campaign says. “Until plastic-free products are the norm industry-wide, looking for the Zero is your best bet!”

Beat the Microbead is backed by the United Nations Environment Programme and has won the support of more than 100 NGOs from 42 countries worldwide. You can follow the campaign on Twitter @BeatTheBead
