But they do more than that. When added to pure liquid silk, they lower silk's charge density or pH, which encourages silk to fold into a gel. The silk gel, in turn, stabilizes the glycolic and lactic acid molecules. When you apply the peel, the gel then delivers the stabilized acids right to the skin, where they once again lower the pH, this time of the collagen proteins that comprise the outer layer of the skin. This is how chemical exfoliators work. Because the glycolic and lactic acid can also do the work of transforming silk into their own delivery vehicle, we get to eliminate whole categories of ingredients often standard to other chemical peels.
